Way past due on an update.

Great news everyone! I finally have wifi at the hospital so I can blog over lunch. My time at Victoria hospital has been wonderful so far. I am in the pediatric department and loving all the little ones. The day begins with rounds in the inpatient department. The inpatient side reminds me of old war time photos where patients are lined up one bed after another but in this case it's one metal crib right after another. 30 patients in one open room. Very different from back home. Each morning I get to see and evaluate 2 patients and present them during rounds. Then we go to clinic which is crazy busy. Tuesday morning was out HIV clinic. Very saddening. In the afternoon we finish all of the tests that we agreed upon during morning rounds.. No nursing care like back in the states. I have to head to the ward so I can't give a full update but tomorrow I will be able to during lunch.

Hello to all,

Today was quite an eventful day. The staff at CFHI drove us around the townships of Cape Town. The poverty is many areas is very saddening. We were taught a lot of history about South Africa, particularly the apartheid era. We also learned how to say hello to a group of people: mo we ni. It reminded me of the mandarin phrase Adam says to me: wo ah ni (I love you). Made me think about home and how much I love and miss everyone :)

This trip started out in typical Heather fashion... checked my camera at OMA... no battery :/ other than that the trip over went very smoothly. Hopefully Walmart carried canon cameras over here. Well that's all for now. Next update will be from Cape Town :)

The beginning of an adventure.

In case you haven't heard.. I am headed to Cape Town, South Africa!! Myself and 5 other PA students from my class are traveling there through the help of Child Family Health International (CFHI) to observe and provide health care in Victoria Hospital. I feel very blessed for this opportunity to travel and am excited to share my experiences with you. We will be spending a month in the South African sun soaking up all that we can.
